Hopefully a real trend for those committed to getting one great watch.
I had this one on my list at 2 ADs. Then I came to my senses, realized I was nth in line, and cost was just not justified and canceled. I’m sure neither AD even noticed.
I was joking. Mostly. They're superb watches. But a non-trivial amount of their mistique and appeal is around the narrative they're hard to get. For some people...
Cambridge you say. Hmmm, next county up, M11 and I could be there in 40 minutes! Shame I am not a fan of the GMT Master 2! Now, polar dial Explorer 2 and we are talking!
I’m not a fan of large watches myself. 34mm and 36mm I think suits me best. I have a 7” wrist, I just don’t like the weight of this type of diver style GMT. My cousin is coming up to Cambridge next week, if it’s still in the window (it won’t be), he will probably buy it
Really? Anything else? I was there there other week faaaaaaaaaaaaak 😂
Mappin & Webb in Cambridge always seem to have great stuff in the window.
This weekend they had a new (not certified pre-owned) Submariner Date with a price tag on it....which means its available to buy. You might still need to have a "relationship" with the M&W Cambridge branch to be able to walk in and buy it, but to me this potentially hints at two things:
Availability might be improving.
People being offered these watches might not buying them, as the financial climate in the UK is not what is was 2-3 years ago.
I have purchased three watches from M&W Cambridge (two Rolex and a Cartier) and last week I was able to put my name down for a Pepsi GMT and told 2-3 years wait time. This time last year I was told I couldn't put my name down and the wait time was +10 years and I'd likely never get one.
The online narrative re the availability of Rolex is always steered by the grey-market dealers, that would like you to believe its impossible to buy Rolex at retail and you need to pay more. The simple truth is that if you are patient, you can get more or less anything you like with the right AD. Sure, you might need to purchase a few pieces to get to the watch you REALLY want. But the chances are if you have the watch collecting virus, you will do this anyway. Pick an AD and stick with them - you'll get the Rolex you want...eventually.

As soon as people know they can get them whenever they want they won't want them.

Haha…I’m not too sure about that
