Timex Still Ticking!

Two weeks ago I received a collection of my dad’s old watches that he no longer wears. Among them were two vintage Timex Mercurys, one from 1962 and the other from 1968. After questioning my dad further about each watch to find more history, it is believed that these both belonged to my grandfather!

The 1968 needs a new crystal and it also does not run. However, after a quick wind the 1962 Mercury fired right up and actually keeps decent time!

I’ve been enjoying canvas straps lately, so I ordered an olive strap for Pop’s watch - it reminds me of the WWII bomber uniform that he would’ve worn with the watch. I think it goes well with the dial. After wearing it during a short trip to Saratoga to see Dave Matthew’s, and to Vermont to see my in-laws, I think I’ll be rotating this one into my watches for regular use. It looks great, is comfortable, tells time we’ll, is easily legible, and has a wonderful ticking sound while sitting at the desk.

Well done Timex!

Really nice watch, and great that your dad and grandad wore them, for me that makes a watch so special ! I hope the 1968 can be fixed.

Thank you, I hope so too. The case should clean up nice and the crystal won't be hard to replace. Worst case scenario is I need to replace the movement.

My very first watch was a Timex Mercury, I got it for Christmas when I was about ten years old. I think I remember what its dial looked like, but I haven't seen one like it on the Internet. It was silver, with 12 and 6, then broad stick indexes for 3 and 9 o'clock, and round indices everywhere else. It had lume, which for a small boy was just too much.

Yours looks great. Crystal looks slightly domed on my screen.

Thanks! Yes my crystal is slightly domed. It turns out it's called a Marlin though, not a Mercury. I got my names mixed up.
