Just Acquired My Latest Project

I’ve been in love with this watch since I was outbid on eBay for one back in May. Since then I’ve been checking nearly every day, and two came up on eBay last week. I love the maroon sunburst dial, and I’m excited to finally have an Omega tuning fork watch.

First order of business will be to get the watch running properly, and the the hands will need to be re-lumed. The case looks a little pitted, and I don’t think it can be polished out as these are usually gold plated. I’ll see if my local watch maker can replace the case. Assuming that he can’t, however, I’m thinking about changing to a stainless case. A new crystal will also need to be sourced. I’ll finish it off with a nice leather strap. I know that changing cases/dials is usually frowned upon, but this will remain in the collection long term so I don’t care about resale value.

I planned to buy one of these to celebrate planting my backyard vineyard this year. Since I won’t be getting the vines in the ground until March or so, that will give me plenty of time to get this Omega sorted for the occasion.

What are your thoughts on keeping the case as-is versus changing it?

Change the case and dial?

It will no longer be a vintage classic. Save the money on those and concentrate on finding someome familiar with the movement. Parts are probably pretty scarce.

A knowledgeable watchmaker might be tough to find also.

Fortunately I have a great watchmaker, he got my old Bulova Accutron running.

Though I’ve found another case, crown and dial that I’m also in love with. I’m not above buying them, and another movement, and building a frankenwatch.

I don’t really have much history. Only that Bulova licensed the tuning fork movement to various other companies like Omega, Longines, and others.

There are several Omega models with the f300Hz movement; there are constellations and various other great models. This one in particular I’m not even sure of the name, but I’ve seen it with a silver dial, gold dial, black dial, cream dial, and a few others. I think the maroon dial is pretty rare.
