Thinking about this obsession

This Christmas I got this absolutely beautiful black leather Stowa strap from my GF. I think that it is even a bit too beautiful and too elegant for my SRPG37 bead blasted field watch.

When I first saw the watch on the strap, it immediately made me think "Hamilton Murph".

As these things go, I started binge watching YT videos about the Murph, checking prices, availability in my country, reading reviews, etc, people on this platform can probably relate. All was well, the Murph is on the northern side of 800€, even though I like the look of it, I don't like the look of it so much that it made me do something about it. A series of rational thoughts were still present -- I don't really need it, the watch is similar to this SRPG I already have, it's about 200€ too expensive for what I think would be a good "bang for buck" in this case.

Now enter this very nice YouTube video from Mark Alamares, where he directly compares the Murph to the SPB159 Baby Alpinist (I dislike the nickname, let's call it NC Alpinist) (NC as in non-compass):

Now, suddenly, everything makes sense. The NC Alpinist is a clear and logical upgrade from the SRPG. The price is acceptable for me at this point in my life, the design speaks to me as well as the history of the Alpinist lineup. I know that the 6R35 is not a stellar movement, but neither is the 4R36 in the SRPG and I have zero issues with it. It's even simple enough that I managed to regulate it DIY. The only thing that irks me is the fact that it doesn't have drilled lugs and I'm a strapoholic, I change my straps very often, this was enabled be the SRPG's drilled lugs. This is the only downgrade when considering the SPB159 Alpinist.

My SRPG is already sold on Chrono24. That's a cascade of events caused by an innocent purchase of a Stowa strap.

I'm still not completely sold on the SPB159, but I'm barely hanging there. I'm telling myself that there's no rush, maybe something else will catch my attention in a few weeks time, as I seem to have a new would-like-to-own watch every other month or so. But the truth is, up to now, none of the previous platonic watches made me actually do something about it. Now the SRPG is sold and I only have a Suunto 5 and a Casio A700 and I know that I will miss a classic watch very soon.

Is this how this thing goes? Is this how you become watch obsessed for the entirety of your life? It feels kinda weird, being like a kid in a toy store, I want I want I want this new toy.

In the two years that I've been spending my free time reading and watching about watches, this never happened to me before. Even when I purchased the SRPG, I was not very certain that it is a good thing to do, a good decision. Now something different happened with the Alpinist.

Not sure where I'm going with this post, just venting my thoughts and maybe looking for similar experiences. And maybe, talk me out of it, tell me why it's a stupid decision, why there are better watches in the same price category.

The Alpinist is a far better watch than the Murph. Had both, the Murph lasted a couple of weeks before it had to go. Flat printed fauxtina numerals and the lack of AR coating made it useless.
