U.K. watchfam - the BBC has a new documentary up about watch theft

Would be interesting to see what crunchers make of it:

Also might be available to any global VPN users.

To be honest, the text describes everything that happens in the video:

  1. Realises there are lots of watch thefts in the wealthy parts of Central London - principally Mayfair and Knightsbridge

  2. Meets young people from deprived estates who have a surprisingly good eye for a Rolex from a distance;

  3. Meets a watch theft gang leader who introduces her to a “spotter” - a female gang member who targets men in high-end bars and passes on what watch they are wearing for gang members to rob;

  4. Gang leader calls end to interview (after asking for his gun to be delivered) due to another gang arriving and the risks of wearing a Rolex Sky Dweller on a deprived estate (there’s an irony there).

Bottom line wear your F91-w out in London

There is a point when an anonymous watch “reseller” gives an interview to tell us “how the industry works”.

She adds £0 value - funny that!

Thanks for sharing. Watched this and found it interesting. One Q I had is how these spotters and thieves can tell some thing's real from afar rather than a cheaper homage, but then again it's unlikely anyone in Mayfair is going to be wearing a Pagani.

I get the impression this was a reconstruction with actors but I could be wrong.

Journalist missed an obvious question, when the guy says "I need to make money, what else am I gonna do?" it's like, uh, get a job and earn an honest living?

Having said that, it does strike me as obscene the prices of some of these watches. Income inequality is on the rise, wealth is more and more heavily concentrated, and the existence of hyper luxury items really symbolizes the distorted priorities we have as a society. I'm not sure humanity benefits from the existence of a $2.2 million watch.

At what point does the price of a watch become obscene?

Why don't people get this freaked about jewellery?

Finally watched this last night and found it quite disappointing - other than scaring people into not wearing a watch in London I'm not sure I learned anything.
