The watch that almost was

Just landed today. The history and quirkiness at such a relatively low price point made this undeniable for me. I actually think the 16mm lug width is the best part. Totally works and I enjoy the quirk, but nobody would ever notice. Only WIS weirdos haha.

Here’s why I didn’t choose the LE: SW200 and ETA similar movements develop issues when handwinding them, miyotas don’t. Premium isn’t worth it for LE, the differences aren’t enough for LE, and no “Swiss made” on the dial makes the SE MORE true to original prototype.

Fun fact, Bulova didn’t lose the contract with the Navy, they walked away from it when the order was only going to be 1000. Didn’t make economic sense for them. Tornek-Rayville was the runner up. I think both are worth getting, not throwing shade whatsoever. I will put a deposit down for one if they let me. I also love faux patina. I’m one of those.

very very nice Bulova Mil Ships is one that is on my wish list, congratulations.

Another fun fact, the moisture indicator on the dial is functional 👍 Congratulations!

I have had many ETA and Sellita movements and handwind every one of them at least 30 times to get them started and never had a hint of a problem. This is over quite a few years.

It’s a known issue you can search online. “Reverse wheels.” Happened to me. You wind and the rotor spins at the same time. You can wind them to get them started, but winding them on a regular basis will cause problems. Happened to me with one or two watches and then I’ve been wary ever since. I bought a ginault with that movement and the founder told me not to wind it, but to literally shake the watch to start it. And when I ordered the watch I got an automated email that was a giant warning to not hand wind the movement… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Looks about the size of the Lunar Pilot. How does the Mil Ships wear?

I had that with my oris diver 65 bico. I’d wind it and the rotor would spin like crazy.

I've seen all the online discussion over the years and I agree the issue is discussed ad nauseum, without a concensus. But I wouldn't call it a known issue as much as an assumed issue.

As far as using Ginault and it's "founder" as an example.......well that's another known issue altogether.

Lol. Let’s not get into that. As an owner of Rolex, I love Ginault. Love not having to worry about getting robbed hahaha

7 inch wrist but flat, so I can wear a lot of sizes. The lug to lug is 50 I think, FWIW. I think it wears great. No experience with lunar pilot.

Crystal is 3mm thicker on LE version. Not sure what height is without crystal, but obviously the crystal height isn’t “felt” on the wrist
