The trouble with smartwatches and yes I have two of them.

From another post; why watch lovers have an issue with X,Y, and Z smartwatch? I think it boils down to two core issues. The first issue is, it’s a computer. Eventually in time it will no longer work. The hardware, software and battery will become obsolete. This leads me to the second reason; it becomes trash. Yes, you can take to electronic recycling centers. It’s no longer useable; unable to fix it or pass it along. It will not have decades of use with a history of each scratch. After having an Apple Watch 4 and a Garmin Instinct 2, I know they are on the descent path to the big recycle center in the sky. What are your thoughts about this topic.

They simply don't appeal to me. Part of my interest in watches is because I get to detach from modern technology. I don't need or want to be more connected in this already overly-connected world.

Be green and go old school. You do have a cell phone I presume. They are watch only because it displays time and sits on the wrist no argument there. Also your charging more often now(slave to another device). The amount of money spent on a smart watch can get you a very nice watch and last far longer than a smart watch. Oh well just my opinion.

Enjoy your watch

Cheers

I agree that they will be garbage when their limited life span is finished. I don’t really care if it’s a computer on my wrist, it’s a convenience/annoyance I can easily shut/take off whenever I want.

I Have nothing against them I've just never been a computer/tech guy, worked on cars my entire life, have an obsession with steam power and all things mechanical and that's what intrigues me about watches, my wife has a smart watch she uses for texting/emails and she loves it, i took My daughter to a birthday party at a skating rink a few weeks ago and while it was fun feeling like I was back In the 90s again I loved being the only parent wearing a mechanical watch lol

I agree, but what is the failure mode? I'm sure the rechargeable battery has a finite lifespan and I'm not sure if those are replaceable as cell phone batteries generally are. My suspicion is that the things can usually be repaired to an extent, just that it's not economically feasible or almost nobody actually does it.

I had several Smartwatches, starting with the Pebble, and they all failed within a few years. The Pebble developed a screen problem, so did the OLED screens of other watches and my last one is a 4 years old TicWatch C2 which can barely last 6 hours before its battery deplete.

They are truly disposable gadgets.

Yes I'm not a fan due to their limited lifecycle, which isn't down to battery or components but software; tech is always obsolete / desupported in 5 years.

But my main bugbear is the look of them. The Apple must be one of the ugliest bracelets ever designed. (Invicta might challenge this assertion).

So are vehicles especially electric vehicles
