The Spinnaker 50 Phantoms

I finally got to acquire one for $500 recently, and it's safe to say the bubble on this infamously hyped piece has finally burst. That said, a bit of a disclaimer, I can't quite give an objective opinion with this watch's base model since in preparation to acquiring this watch a few reviews on the Fleuss, wherein @benswatchclub already did a wonderful job covering its overall specs, down to the diagonal brushed finish on the lugs and horizontal brushed finish in the case overall, which makes it look even nicer up close and in person. I can see why it's Spinnaker's most common design out of its entire roster since I have to say, it's quite a winner.

Thoughts

What I can thankfully comment on though from this one is the aesthetics and the theming, and how well they've adhered to that. There's a pattern with Seconde/Seconde's designs and there's a method to the madness there, for the 50 Phantoms in particular, it's a play on Blancpain's 50 Fathoms, so how does one make that work? Homage the 50 Fathoms using the Fleuss design, add 50 lumed spooks with C1 and C3 Superluminova, and with that, we now have the 50 Phantoms.

The party doesn't stop there because as you've probably seen on marketing materials, you probably seen that the craziness doesn't stop there, because alongside that, we also get a sapphire caseback that features the final surprise on the oscillating weight of the watch:

Just like all other Spinnaker watches, it sports a Seiko NH38, the same one you'd normally find in $100 Invicta Pro Divers and $80 Cadisens. That said, since JAPANESE MOVEMENT is featured prominently in their marketing materials, it's safe to assume it's the ones made from Japan at least, unlike the former two that have their movements made in Indonesia to cut on costs. I am unaware as to whether Spinnaker regulates their watches, I know that their rivals like Vario and Zelos do, but accuracy complaints in the Spinnaker Facebook group seems to say otherwise, that said, I seem to have lucked out on the one I have at least, since these are Watch Accuracy's results of mine at Full Wind, at -2/+3 SPD, it almost gives my SBGE277 a run for its money:

Assuming the Blue 50 Phantoms everyone else is getting this March of 2024 is the same as the one I currently have bar the color of the dial, I'd say you'll love what you're about to get, provided you're the type of person who loves to listen to Blink 182's I Miss You or Sum 41's What's My Age again on repeat, and dressing as if it's Halloween every day of the year, if so, this is the watch for you.

Nice watch

Too spooky for me I don’t deal with the occult

I ordered a blue one but am a little worried about sizing. 43mm is far bigger than I’d normally do but I loved the design so much I had to take a shot. How does it feel on the wrist?

·

I’ve ordered mine! The blue with the ghost bezel. Seriously looking forward to getting it. It just makes me smile, which I suppose sums up the watch.

Glad you got one Matt and thanks for sharing.

Look at that lume shot! 🤣

Oh man, I love this watch!

It feels great! I can see why the Fleuss design is their go-to when it comes to collaborations and limited edition designs because despite the 43mm size, it looks just right on my 6.75 in wrist. It's thicker than my Grand Seiko but somehow it wears smaller than my GS, so it's safe to say you can put your worries at ease with this one.

Had to do a bit of editing in Lightroom to get it to show green prominently since phone denoising and AI corrections was manipulating the color of the lume towards the cooler side. It shines better in real life.

Automatics are inherently flawed compared to their Quartz counterparts in terms of accuracy. If we settle for one, it HAS to look great to offset the practicality of just settling for a Casio F91W, or God forbid, an Apple Watch.

And I agree, this design speaks to me. It says a lot that this is the only other watch I've had that actually got to survive my Grand Seiko. First time in a while where I'm wearing a watch that didn't get me wishing I should've worn my GS instead.
