Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I saw a Seiko Sea Urchin on MassDrop and I bought the watch. It was my first mechanical before I even knew what mechanical watches were. I thought the watch was broken when I first got it, until I saw the see through case back and started to get curious. That got me down the rabbit hole where I have been ever since. But it took me four years to get my first luxury watch (an Oris) and another year after that before I had the courage to get my first big purchase (an Omega). Been pretty content ever since.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Can't remember back that far. The first watch I wore regularly was the watch I got when I got my first "real" (i.e. office) job. It was a two-tone fashion watch (Coach) with the movement made by Movado. It was a rectangular, three register chronograph that I absolutely loved. I wore that every day from 2003 until probably 2015 or so and had it in my collection until one of the chronograph registers failed and I had to toss it. I loved that watch.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

I have my father's watch in my collection which he got by winning the golf club championship in 1956 at the Pittsburgh Field Club. The watch is a vintage 1956 Hamilton Sinclair in 18K gold that I almost never wear, but I would wear it to a formal occasion. It's that timeless and elegant. It also has an engraved case back with the initials of the golf club and the date.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Slow your roll. Watch everything, read everything, try on everything, meet other people with watches and ask questions, but don't buy anything. You don't know what you like until you are in this a while and you can lose a lot of money buying a ton of entry level, affordable watches that turn out to be nothing but flights of fancy.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Breitling, JLC and Zenith, in that order, but Omega has always been my "go to" brand. It's the watch I bought when I finally went upstream and it's still the brand I wear the most today.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

I don't have one. Gun to my head, maybe a JLC Polaris Perpetual Calendar or a Lange Odysseus. More obtainable? Probably a Rolex Batman.
