Dilemma - to buy locally or overseas?

There is a watch that I can buy brand new from overseas that is about 40% cheaper than buying from a retail store here (Melb/Aust). I would prefer to support local businesses, but the 40% is a bitter pill to swallow. What are your thoughts?

As i had just negative experience with buying overseas i highly recommend the local purchasing. Maybe the seller offers you a lil discount if asked

Thank you for your feedback. Buying overseas is always a risk, especially if the item ends up being counterfeit. So for peace of mind, local (official retailer) is a safe bet. And I will be asking for a better price ;-)

I bought 2 Rolexes and 1 Tudor in a retail store in my area. It's a reputable store and I got all I expected from such. As for cheep watches it's usually e-bay and it was mostly OK with some bad apples, but I was ready for any outcome.

You should also factor in whether there would be any hidden costs to importing the watch. Customs fees and import duties can drastically increase the total cost paid. Is Australian sales tax also included in the price?

Yeah, got caught out on that before, there was GST fees, but then there were additional carrier fees (DHL and FedEx), which increased the price by 15%.

It all depends on the overall value. If it's over $1000, you'll definitely get slugged the GST, plus about $80 in import duties on top. This might still leave the watch as a hell of a deal versus local pricing. In which case, I'd do it. We live in a global economy. If local stores can't compete (or more correctly in most cases, don't want to compete), local stores can go to the wall. Simple as that. We don't owe them anything.
