HOW is it so small?

I was recently browsing watch porn on ebay and cut a deal for 3 pieces including a nice little gift for the mrs.

they turned up and are all in great condition, i set the time on them all and came back to this one a few hours later and thought ohhh NO its dead or the battery is gone.

I then turned the crown and it wound, if I had been paying more attention to the listing, i would have read "hand wound" 😂

how do they make a mechanical movement so small? (image next to a AA battery)

the face is smaller than a penny?and the case is about 4mm

remembering this is also a vintage piece 40+ years old......its witchcraft
