What was the watch that hooked you?

As a kid I had a timex that has long been lost, but I remember it had given me joy. However I was never hooked and watches never really crossed my mind. Then one day, about 20 years later it dawned on me that I hadn’t had a watch in forever. I had been following the pocket knife scene and I felt like I needed a watch again. I found it with this Timex Weekender.

I was drawn to the cream colored dial and brass colored case. When I received it however, as much as I tried to like it, it didn’t spark joy.

Walking in my local store one day I stopped at a watch display. There another timex caught my eye.

The Timex Expedition. I liked the rugged appearance and the outdoorsy feel it gave me. At the time the fact that the seconds hand wobbled and never hit any of the indices dead on was lost on me.

What this watch did was make me beg the question. “What else is there? What watches are out there beyond the countertops at my local department store?”

That’s when I found myself researching like a student getting ready for their phd. I don’t remember how or when I found out about Citizen but the idea that it was solar powered was the coolest thing to me. And the prices didn’t seem to be too crazy. I ordered the Citizen Brycen seen in the pictures for like $60, more than I had ever spent on a watch, and I remember what parking lot I was in when I first opened up the package. The finishing was so well done, it didn’t feel cheap like my previous watches. It had heft. It oozed quality. (At that price point).

It might have started with the timex weekender but the Citizen hooked me in and now I’m over 12 watches deep.

For me it were many watches. Basically looking at all the Q&Qs I've had, I'm glad I finally have a real Citizen in my collection.

Mine was a Timex dive style watch similar to the image.

My dad was working in the North Sea in the 70s so had a 'proper' watch - which he still wears to this day - and this was a Christmas present from my grandparents if I remember correctly, was ~45 years ago so the memory is fading LOL.

Nice watch! Looks like timex needs to return to their roots!
