The One That Got Away

I think everyone in the community knows a watch they had an opportunity to buy but circumstances or bad luck got in the way and it just never happened.

For me, that watch was a modded Seiko Sarb063 Alpinist GMT. I was so close to purchasing it but I told myself "wait a week and if it's still there and you still want it, get it." One week passes and of course it's gone.

So, what was it exactly? It was an OEM Seiko Sarb063 dial, compass bezel, and handset modded into a PVD SKX case to fit an HN34 movement along with a matching white GMT hand. The markings on the chapter ring were custom orange as well and there was the addition of white 24hr marking on the dial. The glass was sapphire and had a cyclops. But best of all, there was the word "Alpinist" on the dial, something that is sadly missing today.

In short, I saw this as a true do it all adventure watch. And in some ways I still do. However while I missed out on this incredible mod it did lead me to my Orient Star which is by far my favorite watch purchase this year. This Seiko Alpinist GMT also encouraged me to look into watch mods and I'm happy to say I have taken the first step in that realm! So, while I did miss out on this great and unique mod, it inspired me to be bold and build a watch I can call my own and for that I am grateful. Who knows, maybe someday I'll build something similar!

What's a watch that you missed out on and still think about? Did you learn anything from the experience? Would love to hear your stories!

1st Swatch watch ? 😂

Tudor North Flag

Tried it on,had the cash. Went for my SM300 instead. Don't regret choosing the better watch, love it, but still think it's the nicest watch Tudor have made & prices are rising rapidly beyond my comfort zone so I doubt I'll ever have one.

That Seiko mod really is rather cool

Look forward to seeing your recreation of it 👍🏻
