Am I the only one who feels this way?

For how much a lot of luxury companies charge and how much they arw lauded for their movement decoration, they don’t really do much that is creative. They all just stick to the same types of finishing, expect maybe Raketa and Vostok?

Much of watch making is steep in tradition, including finishing. The difference now is obviously quality of materials, accuracy, power reserve, etc. I would love to see even more folks mix up types of finishing, but or course, pricing is always prohibitive and if I have learned anything in this hobby is how little folks appreciate movements, nevermind finishing. Now many do, but they represent a smaller sect in the community, where others will love to talk about how a base Sellita is just as good as an Omega or Rolex movement, because hey “they do the same thing.”

Depends on the brand and country. Personally GO do some fantastic finishing well under £30k especially on the second hand market. Also dornblueth and sohne do some amazing work. And of course not forgetting A Lange and Sohne. The Swiss brands you have to pay a lot more for the same level of hand craftsmanship

My criticism is primarily aimed at high-horology brands, where movement finishing is a big selling point and point of pride for the brand

I mostly notice solid plates instead of multiple bridges.

Beautiful movements and good engineering often go against each other. A good movement is stable and solid. That's why Germans love the 3/4 plate, it strengthens the structure. But it gives you less to look at, even when everything is beautifully finished and decorated.

And there is no excuse that a luxury watch could be worse than COSC.

And with the actual decoration... it's a machine. I don't need an engraved Mona Lisa, I want to see the gears!

I think you can have both though, on last point

I like seeing the gears, too. It’s why I like my Vostok movements better than the Seiko ones I have. Comparing it his Seiko 5, one of my cousins even told me “Ah man yours is way cooler than mine” haha

Oh, it does look rad! I bet it would look smashing on mine too (red movement holder!), but it's already amazingly thick. How thick is yours? Mine is 15 mm stock.

I love my other one with a red movement holder.

Im kinda used to it. The only time I feel it being super tall is when when I wear it on its stick Zulu strap with the exhibition caseback

Oh yeah, their zulus are proper thick. I cut mine to be single-pass, because the bottom part was too short to be of any use.
