The Grey Ghost of San Martin

I'm failing miserably at photography. This morning I tried to capture the grey sunburst from the dial of the 37mm San Martin SN-007-G-X 62MAS and the rising sun made it as easy as catching a ghost in a bottle.

The Grey Ghost was one of the nicknames of the USS Enterprise (CV-6) which continued fighting through all of WW2, despite being announced by the Japanese as sunk on at least three occasions. My San Martin 62MAS isn't going to sink anytime, but it's very grey - even if the dawn light is making it appear more rose than it really is.

The SM SN007 is also a superb modern 62MAS, able to capture the look and feel of the original better than Seiko own SPB does. Mine is fitted on the FKM waffle strap which still feels a bit weird despite my efforts to get used to FKM. The combination looks like something from the 60's but it's very much the result of 21st century manufacturing.

It's not a fancy looking watch, but then the original 62MAS was neither fancy nor particularly expensive. Being grey and simple fits the SN007, just like it did for the Enterprise and trying to make it look pretty would be like painting gold trim on the original Grey Ghost.

One thing for sure, FKM rubber may feel a bit weird but it sure makes for comfortable straps, and unlike silicone it won't make me itchy at the end of the day.

You won’t be able to with most phone cameras, and even with an iPhone 13/14 Pro you most likely can’t with the stock Camera app.

I do my WRUW photos on an iPhone 13 Pro using the Lightroom app for both camera and editing.

If I was to take a serious photo of my watches I’d be using my ZV-E10 with a few different lenses, polarized filters, and COB lights with lots of diffusion (at least a softbox if not additional diffusion and some white board for soft fill).

If you are looking at pro photos, know that there are a few thousand dollars of gear between you.

But dude, turning off the incorrect date on your photos would be a good start. ;)

PS a plain white shower curtain over a window will give you much better controlled lighting for very little money.

Sorry to disappoint but (a) I don't use a phone camera and (b) the date is absolutely correct.

The camera I'm using is an aging Canon G12 and it has a polarizing filter, but sometime that's not enough. I know that I can use screens and diffusers to make a photo looks better, but all things considered - it starts to sound and look like work, and I have enough of it already in my life. Just like I can't be arsed to spend time on photo editing, although I'm quite good with Corel PaintShop. I know that I'll never be a pro photographer, but hoping for one nice grey sunburst photo isn't asking for too much.

The date is correct (for me) because I use the same date format that 95% of the world population does and I keep it on because I know that it irks the purists and annoy people. At my age I can't be too picky about where I get my pleasures, even if they are childish.

Sorry about the date mixup. Wouldn’t have happened yesterday. But there’s still no reason to have a date floating on an otherwise nice photo.

Sorry you can’t be arsed.

In fact, when I was replying, it was 31-5-23 here. So your European format didn’t occur to me. Time zone fun.

Of course there is: It annoys random people on the internet. You can't put a price tag on this.

Aha! I had to wait until the sun decided to rise and get to work but I got my grey Sunburst at last.
