Simple Things

Sometime I wonder why I feel the need to complicate things unnecessarily.

I have a drool worthy Hi-Fi and multimedia setup in the living room and it's automated to the point where the push of a single button will set the audio routing just the right way and adjust correctly the level for every input or scenario, and yet it's just too complicated to use for anyone else beside myself and even I prefer sometime to listen to LP records despite owning the same album in various other and more modern formats, which may or may not be better.

Just like the M5610. It's a watch that can't be accused of being excessively pretty. Its rectangular shape doesn't have an intricate design, the materials from which it was made aren't exactly exotics, and its digital LCD display is far from being the herald of a new technological breakthrough. It's a simple old school, 80's styled G-Shock watch.

And I love it, despite having plenty of other watches to choose from. Some - like the Yema bronze and crimson Superman that I wore yesterday are far more drool worthy than this block of black plastic. Except that, no matter how pretty or expensive looking they are, none of them can pull me like the GW-M5610U does.

The M5610 is a square and squares are the watches that you need, not the watches that you want. This distinction is simple, yet often lost.

To me it means simplicity and focus. It means that the M5610 is a Bauhaus watch, despite the angular beveled shape of its case. There's a misconception that Bauhaus and minimalism are synonymous but it's only because one of the main intent of Bauhaus was to allow for mass production, and simplifying designs was a good way to do it. The M5610 is a Bauhaus watch because it mastered the basic intent of the Bauhaus school by being a watch focused on being both mass produced and be a reliable watch and it's undeniably excelling at both functions.

It's also very comfortable to wear once the stiff resin (aka plastic fantastic) strap is replaced by the combi-bracelet, and the latest U modules finally fixed the major date format annoyance.

It's a simple watch and today I want simple things.

IMO the differences in illumination are minor to non existent.

Didn t have exactly the same, but the 5600 SMB, 5040 (on Combi)& the 5000U. I adore them for exactly what they are (as described by you): simple, reliable tools to display the exact time

I still have my old DW-5600E and I keep it in the car's glove box. They are perfect.

you will be happier if you don't have OCD towards the minor differences 😂

I prefer the evenly distributed EL than LED being brighter on one side.

Depends on how old ya piece is and how often ya use the lighting EL can be exhausted, as happend to my (old, first- releaser) 6900 after about 20 years. But the lighting is way better, indeed

The variance in brightness is so minuscule that it's not even worth mentioning. OTOH the fixed MMDD date format of the older modules is an ongoing and persistent annoyance that I'm pleased to see gone with the U modules.

I’m the same way! Sure I have flashier pieces in the watch box but for some reason the good old dw5600 gets a lot of wrist time. Sometimes simple is better!

It's hard to beat G-Shock.

·

Indeed it is. You need another G-Shock, or maybe two more, to beat one.

The combi bracelet is the only way to wear the smaller gshocks
