My greatest success as a personal watch shopping assistant!

I love watches. I love talking about them, wearing them, looking at them, reading about them. I also love when I suck someone deep into the rabbit hole. We all do.

Here's the story of my latest satisfied victim.

My team at work know I'm a watch nut. I'm constantly showing them different watches I like to get their opinion, but mostly just to engage someone about watches. Sure, I can ask you lot, but it's nice to talk to human beings in the flesh about it. I've bored the crap out of them by sharing about the legendary Lemania 2310 movement to the process of making a grand feu enamel dial and how durable tantalum is as a metal. Usually, they entertain me and seem interested. My wife tells me it's only because I'm their manager.

So, my team member bought her husband his first watch 20y ago, a Tag. He now has another Tag Heuer and a couple of seikos. She's doing really well at work and has been a few years with us. My watch hobby is rubbing off on her and she wants to get him a watch for their 20th anniversary. Great, my next victim!! Jk, not my victim, but I don't know why I enjoy recommending things to people. I like being a source of knowledge, I like helping people, I like to live vicariously through anyone that wants to spend money on watches so I can feel 10% of that joy.

So, I asked what he likes and what his collection looks like. She has no idea about watches, so we go shopping. She doesn't like dress watches and doesn't seem like his Style, however she likes the look of Zenith chronomasters

And of course he liked these Daytonas

Finally, we go to a Rolex AD and he goes on the waiting list for the blue dial datejust.

Things go quiet for a while and I don't push too hard because I'm sure I was annoying with my constant random suggestions and visiting watch shops at the airport after business trips.

Today, I get a message from my team member, who is in Switzerland for work. I let her and a team member join instead of me selfishly going myself. I was dying to go, but I put their and business needs first of course! On a side note, they stopped by my grail watch maker, Akrivia to do a recce for me. Very small shop in Geneva.

Anyway, she shares with me the news, she got a watch from Bucherer! I'm so excited for her and the Hubs. Mu mind was racing. What could she have gotten on the spot from Bucherer?? They have so many brands.... Did she play it solid and safe with Rolex? Did she go Trinity? Go fort other options like the JLC Polaris? Then, she lands the mother f'n bombs of all time. My jaw dropped. I was so proud of her I almost cried. I was beaming with happiness for her when she explained that it was symbolic of their 20y together, her new-ish job, a very fruitful business trip, and marked a "I made it" point in her life. I was also of course 1% jealous of her lucky a$$ hubby, but he's a nice bloke so all good.

Oh, the watch, sorry I forgot about it in my excitement for her.

It was this.

Great story my friend

lucky guy! - sadly my wifey has zero interest and zero purchasing power (other than my card that’s in her name 🫤). So any purchase for me is actually me buying for me, so easier just to let me waste money that way 😂

Seems like you can be a great influencer for your staff.

Maybe consider adding “influencer” to your CV and linked-in profile?

Yeah same for me. My wife told me that she'll never buy me a watch, but that's fine as I'll get what I like!
