Vintage watch shopping in HK is sensory overload.

Never seen shops like this anywhere else in the world. An entire city block where its all vintage watches. Can't help but realize that most is Rolex flipping by jerks who ruin it for enthusiasts. Also omega swatches for going for $550 USD 🤯

I remember going to a technology market years ago in Hong Kong, they do like to fill the display, never seen so many rolex for sale in one window.

All quite old if you ask

Back in the 90's as a young Asst Account Executive at an Ad Agency that I slid into an assignment, I went to HK on a work project. I went watch shopping and caught the high-end watch bug there.

It’s a comment that can be insensitive.

Hong Kong has always been like this

I miss the good old days when guys who worked in Chinese restaurants either as servers or cooks all wore either steel Rolex or Omega Seamaster watches. Shortly after my marriage, my new brother in law suggested I make the trip with him to Vietnam where he was checking out manufacturing for his wholesale shoe business which would be much cheaper than HK or even China, I could look for Rolex watches left behind by the French and Americans, at least that was the idea. There were still signs of desvastation from wars but little in the way of collectable watches, piles of bad fakes for sale. A young business cohort has returned to Ho Chi Minh City for his health informs me that there are now shops selling amazing watches new and vintage.

Hong Kong is great for watch hunting … but it’s hard to find a good deal anymore there … lots of selection though

No, Hong Kong is way too expensive a place to manufacture fakes.

It has been a top place for luxury watches for decades. This is why you will see Christie’s, Phillips, and Sotheby’s auction top watches here among just a handful of cities worldwide.

If you feel the need to deride it, you might say Hong Kong is a place where people go to launder money due to no import duties or sales tax.

Or low income tax means it is a haven for many well heeled ex-pats.

But you probably didnt know that.

Just last night, I was reading a Mark Twain quote “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts”

Have you read his travel book “The Innocents Abroad?” he took the first round the world Cruise in the late 1860s. It’s a read worth your time.
