Import charges and fees Japan to UK

Hi Crunchers, does anyone have any idea about the import fees on a £400 G Shock from Japan to the UK? I am thinking of ordering something but I do not want to be hit with savage fees from import. Any ideas on charges would be greatly appreciated.

You’ll be hit with vat @ 20% on the cost of the watch & the cost of the courier. The courier also adds a fee for their administration through customs. Normally between £10-15.

Thanks. Shipping is included, but it is damn HMRC charges!

I tend to just add 25% to cover all the costs

Thanks, it does seem to be about that. Makes the watch a bit too much now 😒😒

I'm with @tiffer I was charged 20% plus a small fee. But the process was relatively efficient.

In Spain on the other hand... I endured several months of bureaucracy before my watch was "abondoned". I've since learned this is what can happen in the EU if the seller/exporter lies about the value on the parcel. 😕

Shipping things as valuable as some watches can get very expensive very quickly. Don't ask how I know😂.

Although shipping is included, HMRC will attribute a value to this inclusive cost & will charge vat on this. I’m 90% certain this is the case but the legislation, rules on these issues can regularly change.

You can always use the HMRC tariff checker to give you an idea of import duty.

https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff

just type the description into the search tab or request the tariff code the shipper is using, it will give you an idea of duty costs. You will also need to add 20% vat on top.
