Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I got into watch collecting somewhat accidentally. As a child, I liked mechanical devices, and my interest grew as I studied engineering. While working part-time at a high-end restaurant, I noticed all the chefs wore attractive watches, which piqued my interest.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

The Casio AMW330-7AV quartz watches is an excellent option for those who live actively. This watch has a water resistance of 100 meters, making it perfect for activities like snorkeling and swimming. The protective mineral glass dial window is also solid and durable, making it withstand everyday wear and tear.

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

While celebrating my 21st wedding anniversary, my wife's birthday, and my birthday, we found ourselves stranded at the bustling Orlando airport. As we navigated through the chaos, attempting to make our way home, fate had other plans. Despite our best efforts, we got stuck in the whirlwind of flight delays and cancellations. Eventually, we embarked on an unexpected journey, opting to drive back home instead. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport, Detief and I struck up a conversation, sharing our shared passion for collecting watches and bridging the gap between strangers. Little did I know that this chance encounter would culminate in the gift of a Poljot watch, a radiant symbol of the serendipitous connections forged amidst the chaos of airport life. As we bid farewell and embarked on our impromptu road trip, the watch served as a beacon of light, illuminating the memories of our shared camaraderie amidst our journey's unexpected twists and turns.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

One piece of advice I’d offer is to explore different styles, brands, and movements to find what resonates with you. Learning about the history and craftsmanship behind each timepiece can deepen your appreciation for the art of watchmaking. It sounds like you're cautioning against the addictive nature of collecting watches and emphasizing the importance of budgeting and prioritizing purchases. Indeed, diving into the horological world can lead to a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and design, but balancing enthusiasm with financial responsibility is essential. Automatic watches with sweeping hands have a special allure that often draws enthusiasts more plunging into the hobby.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

Recently, I've found myself drawn to Longines and Tudor. Something about their price points and the simplicity yet elegance of their watches captivates me. The design philosophy of both brands is impressive, making them excellent options to wear.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

The Longines Heritage Classic Sector Dial is my grail watch because of its timeless design and vintage appeal. Longines is known for its elegant and classic timepieces, and this model perfectly captures that essence with its retro-inspired dial. The Longines Hydroconquest is another favorite of mine. Longines is renowned for its precision and durability, and the Hydroconquest exemplifies this with its robust construction and water resistance. It's a reliable companion for any adventure. The JLC Reverso holds a special place in my heart. Jaeger-LeCoultre is synonymous with luxury and craftsmanship, and the Reverso epitomizes that reputation with its iconic reversible case design. It's a symbol of sophistication and versatility. The Rolex no-date Submariner is a classic choice for watch enthusiasts. Rolex symbolizes status and prestige, and the Submariner embodies that with its timeless design and impeccable engineering. It's the ultimate tool watch for diving professionals and fans alike. Lastly, the Tornek Rayville is a rare gem in the world of horology. Tornek was a supplier to the U.S. Navy, and collectors highly sought after their watches for their historical significance and rugged build quality. It's a piece of military history that I'd love to have in my collection.
