Erebus Origin review

My Erebus Origin. First I must commend Erebus for their excellent customer care. I received the watch in teal color in error. It was actually mostly my fault. I ordered the teal version and changed the order to white the next day. Unfortunately, I still received the teal. I contacted the company and they replaced it with the right version at no charge. They sent me a pre-paid return label and re shipped it all in about 12 days. Considering it shipped from Sidney to the U.S. , that’s excellent. Now to the watch. The measurements were spot on a described. 41mm case, 47 lug to lug, 20mm lug with, and 12.5mm thick…perfect on my 7.5 in wrist. The white dial is textured and has a slightly silvery sheen to it. The orange highlights on the seconds hands, on the 10s , and on the “20 ATM” text , along with the color matching date at the 6 completes this striking, perfectly balanced dial. The bezel is a very nice grayish/ black ceramic which complements the dial beautifully. The case and bracelet are both nicely brushed and look and feel more expensive than they are. I selected the curved link bracelet. There is also a flat link available if you prefer. The extra strap package comes with and excellent FMK , a silicone , and single pass nato style straps. The quick release spring bars make strap swaps very easy. You also get loose QR spring bars to use with nato straps. This is a nice touch that shows the whole package was well thought out. The venerable NH 35 isn’t sexy but it keeps great time to the tune of about +4 seconds a day. One complaint, and not a small one at that, was with the inner edges of the bracelet, which were a bit sharp and irritating. I took an cheap fingernail buffer block to it on the 3rd level grit and then finished it off with the second grit and it cured the issue after about 5 minutes . Visually I don’t notice anything was done. None of the reviewers mentioned it this issue, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to a QC miss. Overall I love this watch and find myself reaching for it in my watch box often. I experimented with an orange tropic strap and also a light grey Perlon and both look fantastic. No regrets!!!

I'd say you were very fortunate with your Erebus Origin. I purchased exactly the same model with the "frost" dial. Unfortunately, the quality of the example I received was not in the same league as you report. First and foremost, the watch fails to advance the date automatically. It freezes halfway through the update at midnight. And far from being a model of accuracy it loses over 50s every 24 hours. Erebus agreed, of course, to examine the watch under warranty to deal with the failing daily updates but they didn't offer to pay for shipping from the US to Australia, a charge of nearly $100 with insurance. I haven't decided whether to see if my local watchmaker can fix it or just live with a bad investment.

Tears aren't called for. Just a recognition that quality control in a new enterprise such as Erebus may well be an iffy proposition. I originally purchased the Origin because I've found Jody Musgrove's watch reviews to be informative and entertaining and I admired his willingness put his money where his mouth is. I'm disappointed in his firm's response to my specific problem but I'll live with it and content myself with providing a warning to others.
