Superhero Watches & Other Interests

Like the majority of people out there, I too am a multifaceted individual with varying interests and hobbies (or obsessions 😂). Perhaps one of my favorite ways to pass time in the evenings or on slow weekends is to crack open my current Jack Ryan novel and pour myself a bourbon. Wearing a “superhero” watch like this Citizen Promaster diver just completes the vibe, making me feel like I am him and he is me (I’m allowed to dream).

But last night I got to thinking: what do other people do to enjoy their off time when they aren’t hunting their next purchase on eBay? And, if it does in some way, how does it connect to your obsession with watches?

For me, it’s the niche connection that tool watches have to military and espionage stories written by legends like Tom Clancy, Jack Carr or W. E. B. Griffin. One of the many interests I inherited from my father!

I am an avid hiker and backpacker, so that reflects my liking of field watches and no nonsense practical watches.

That’s awesome, what’s your go-to hiking companion? For practicality, mine is my Garmin Instinct Solar because of all the complications it has but I also love having a Timex or G-Shock along for the ride!

I’m taking my newly acquired Timex Expedition Scout Chronograph as my dedicated “hiking” watch.

The Indiglo is great at night, and I use the chronograph to time out my breaks!

Good array! Benchmade, Timex, and Gerber?

That’s exactly right, a solid daily carry! My only gripe is the loud ticking on this Expedition in particular due to the plastic case. Otherwise, it’s great! I’ve had my eye on a Marathon Navigator to take its place since I love the tritium tubes!

Trail riding anytime I can. Always wore G-shock until I discovered the Venturian WildSider

Whiskey and spy lit are also hobbies for me! I’m in KY so bourbon is the drink of choice here.

Nice! I’m in MO so I’m still new to the bourbon game but learning all the time! 🥃

I enjoy finding well designed everyday objects as much as wearing a favourite watch, including Murano glass, stovetop espresso makers, vintage ashtrays with products advertising etcetera. A few weeks ago I needed to drop off my Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage watch at the Swatch service centre to replace the clasp when I noticed somebody had tossed a box of small industrial colour glass samples, the kind I have seen in companies that build business store fronts. Contractors were gutting an Edwardian row house for conversion, a lucky find for me which I might turn into a small display case for a few watches. I have also found the occasional furniture worth restoring but those projects are for a retired handyman that I know.

I tried the Seiko 5 field watch in Afghanistan, it didn’t last but 3 days. I had my Casio Pathfinder in a bag. The Pathfinder made through five years there. I learned how to repair a Seiko too.

That’s tough to hear as a Seiko fanboy, but I can understand! I doubt many other watches besides the G-Shock I wore could have survived the flight deck I spent a few good years on. Glad you got to fix the Seiko though!
