It probably wasn’t the kind of narrative the President thought would arise from his testifying in front of the House Judiciary Subcommittee. He likely figured the focus would be on his plan to pardon his predecessor. Watergate was a wild time for the country, and Gerald Ford was ready to move on. He was ready to get out of the headlines. (At least, as much as a sitting president could.) The media wasn’t going to let that happen, however, and if the 38th commander-in-chief wasn’t on the front of national news for one thing, surely, he would end up there anyway for something else. Which is exactly what happened when the press caught wind of just how much the watch on his presidential wrist cost; at least, how much they thought it cost...
