Thoughts on the Seiko prospex kinetic GMT SUN023

Hey fellow crunchers!

Does anyone have a seiko prospex kinetic GMT SUN023 and could share an experience or two about it?

Are these kind of watches literally bomb proof and would the kinetic movement pose any issues in the long run?

Would love to hear from you all as I’m considering getting one!

Thanks for reading!

From what I have read, vintage kinetic watches must be regularly worn to stay running. If they lose power, it will take a lot of moving to get the power high enough to resume running and hand winding or putting them on a winder doesn't seem to help keep them powered up.

In short, they are a great daily watch, but if you plan to wear them consistently less than 6 of 7 days, owning one may not be a joyful experience.

That said, the watch pictured appears to be a newer model and hand winding does charge the power reserve as indicated here.

It's a sharp looking watch.

Kinetic maintenance issues aside, that's a bad-ass watch!

I might look out for that one!

·

I don't have anything to add to knowledge of kinetic watches.

I do love the look of that watch.

I don't have the 023 but have the sun043 aka the yeti. I love it. They are big though so if you do not like big watches then I would consider something else. They require regular wrist time if they loose power they take a few thousand shakes to get back up to speed. But very accurate tough and reliable. Great diver and I have not had any issues. If the compactor gets to where it will not store power it isn't that much to get them replaced. The lume is the best of any watch i own by far. I don't think you would regret it! Pull the trigger 🤣😂

Cool, thanks for sharing! Would be awesome if the hand winding feature is available for this model

The yeti looks amazing! I do have at least 7 watches that I rotate on a weekly basis 😂 not sure if I can stomach a few thousand shakes haha.

Is there a handwinding feature to store power?

Replacing the compactor doesn’t mean replacing the movement correct?

This thing is almost blindingly bright!

I'll have to get a new pair of sunglasses just to look at it with! 😎

He meant capacitor. But it's not a whole movement swap, just a piece. Akin to replacing a mainspring in a regular automatic or hand wind mechanical.

Capacitor 😂🤣...but I forgot that I think these models replaced the capacitor with lithium batteries to store the power instead. Old kenitic movements got a bad rap for the capacitors so they use batteries now. That being said you still don't want it to go dead often or it will weaken the life of the battery. With that these things have a 6 month power reserve. The thousand shakes was an exaggeration a little bit because that is for full power. There are 4 levels. First level about a day or 2, second level about a week, 3rd level 2 to three months and 4th level 6 months. So if you pull it out once a week and go walking or hiking or some activity you should be good. I am not aware of any hand winding but once I saw it mentioned I started looking through the manual 🤣😂. Like I said I love this thing. The stock strap is nice but very long by design and the 24mm is hard to find a replacement for.

There is just something about a rotor floating freely with magnetic levitation charging the watch that seemed very cool to me.

It will light up a room

I have the kinetic landmaster and the movement has been solid for the last 2 years that I’ve had it. I’ve taken it on vacation, rock climbing, and some rough and tumble activities without issue.

The jump hour is pretty crisp and convenient for travel.

regarding the SUN model specifically, I dont have any hands on experience but do recall the dimensions being pretty intimidating…

Thanks! Managed to find an online manual, it mentions around 250 shakes 😂 good to know that a days worth of wearing should do it.

Nice! What’s your work rest cycle for the landmaster? Do you wear it for a day and rotate watches throughout the week?

i rotate between 4 or so with the Landmaster included. After I got it to the 6 month mark it’s never fallen short of the 2 week indicator.

To be more specific, I probably wear the Landmaster once or twice a week. While on calls I’ll sometimes take it off and do the seiko shake as a fidget toy… haha
