Thoughts on Squale watches

Hey guys!

Any thoughts on the Squale 30 ATMOS Series - the Dusky GMT Ceramica 40 mm?

Image

Would love to know your thoughts and review and for those who have a similar model as well.

Are these squales any good?

How would a gmt watches running on Swiss ETA 2893-2 / Sellita SW330-1 compare against a seiko NH34?

Thanks for reading and for the comments!

hello i actually considering this one, but my heart choose glycine dc4. mostly because its heritage and the squale is more like an homage to the rolex gmt

Good choices.

I'd say go for the Squale if you don't mind the cost. Power reserve wise it's close, with 40 hours with the NH34 and 42 hours for both 2893-2/330-1.

I think Squale may edge the Seiko GMT in the bracelet though don't quote me on that.

If 300m WR is your thing, go for the Squale. Hope that helps.

I'm a big fan of Squale - currently owning the 1521 PVD, Sub-39 with blue sunburst dial and a 101 Atmos 2002. I would love to own a Corallo chronograph or perhaps their Super Squale one of these days, but I simply have far too many divers right now.

In my mind, Squale has a significant cache within the annals of horological history - primarily with case design and manufacture.

That said, the 30 Atmos - to my mind - resides firmly in the "Rolex GMT homage" camp; somewhat removed from what I believe Squale is known and acknowledged for. But that's for the history buffs.

I've held this watch in person, and it feels solid overall, and I think the movement within is as good as it gets for the price. However, the faux patina on the bezel threw me off and I thought it was too dark versus the relative bling of the polished surface on the watch itself. Sizing on my 7.25-inch wrist felt like any of the Rolex 40mm offerings - surprise! The short lugs will definitely do well for those with smaller wrists.

@thepiedpiper have you experienced it in person?

Hey Eric! Welcome to WatchCrunch, and an even bigger welcome to a fellow Singaporean!

Yes I’ve heard how signaficiant squale is historically especially with the fifty fathoms.

Gotta admit, the few models I have in mind are like what you said, firmly in the Rolex gmt homage category. I enjoy how it doesn’t “copy” the hands and there’re subtle difference that point away to Rolex. Having said that, it screams Rolex at a glance 😂

That aside, I’m looking at having a gmt function.

Understand that there are lots of homages out there - steinharts etc.

I’ve not held this particular model in person, seen quite a bit of YouTube videos on it. And yes, the lume and I do find the patina indexes are a little out of place.

Cheers and may our paths cross one day!

Nice one my fellow dweller of the PORE 😂

Yeah, it's hard to not think of Rolex when looking at the Squale 30 Atmos design.

In my mind, there are a number of "true GMT" options coming out, especially after Miyota has started making its 9075 movement available to microbrands.

Traska's Venturer GMT (currently out of stock) is one such design; I recently decided to drop some coin to pre-order the Borealis Estoril 300 GMT - it is a bit of an Omega mish-mash but I like the boldness of it all.

Any other GMTs you're looking at?

Woah, I was just looking at the borealis!! Maybe the panda Seastorm..

What made you choose the Estoril over the Seastorm?

I think maybe a part of me wanted to experience the "lyre-lugs" and case shape, along with the flat bezel insert. Also the Sea Storm uses the NH34, which is a "caller" GMT. I wanted a "Flyer" GMT movement, which so far, only the Estoril utilises.

But back to the Squale, @thepiedpiper they do a Sub-39 GMT model

Nice, thanks for sharing! Which estoril colourway and variant you decided on?

black dial, big triangle.

black dial, big triangle.

Nice! Any reason for going dateless?

Yeah for the longest time I’d been going for watches with date function; wanted to break away from that for more recent purchases, also for a more symmetrical dial.

I've had this beauty for 4 yrs now, and it's survived 3 purges and is a permanent part of my collection. Still one of, if not the most, beautiful pieces in my collection. Running at +8 sec/d. I could sell it for a profit but wouldn't even think of it, I love wearing it too much.
