It doesn't rotate freely inside itself, though the watch itself is a sphere and each side's crystal in a half sphere. It hangs on the chain upside down so you can wear it around your neck and look down to read the time. This one still works and keeps time. I am not familiar with other watches of this vintage that have transparent casebacks / visible movements.... it's a keeper for sure.
