What steel to choose for spring bars?

I see some using 304 and other using 316L...

If I understand correctly, it seems that 316L is a bit more resistant against corrosion from sea water.

BUT, based on the fact that my watch case is also based on 316L, I wonder if using steel of the same hardness does not increase the risk of scratching or damaging the lug holes on the long term.

As I plan to take quick release bars and change straps often (at least twice a day), I think this is something worth considering.

Thank you for your help.

I work in pharma. You can use 304 and 316 right next to each other in contact. 316 is just more corrosion resistant against (certain industry) caustic cleaning agents. But your watches should never see anything actually corrosive. Random link I found.

Thanks, very interesting and in-depth.

So to the contrary of what I though, 304 is actually harder than all 316 versions.

304L is the softest, so it is probably a safer choice to avoid scratching, if I can find such lugs.

Just found this article with a cool test against rust (a fake, cheap steel bar with iron inside vs 316L bar) :

Rolex & Wise spring to mind for 304 cases, maybe Ball too (?)

Someone more knowledgeable will hopefully chime in soon 👍🏻
