Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

This happened January 2022 and it came from nowhere. I don't know why I became obsessed with watches. I just changed the strap and battery of my Casio and boom!

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

I think it was a Casio F-91W or a similar one when I was a kid. I have faded memories about it, but I have clear image in my mind that I pushed its buttons regularly. And I remember I wore a woman/unisex watch when I was in primary school/high school, it was a Readers Digest quartz with digital hands. (I loved the moon image on the dial.)

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

I have a 90 years old gold watch from Britain and I have no idea how this ended up in an old guy's basement in a small Central European city before me. It would be interesting to find out its story...

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

There are a tons of watches out there. If you don't buy that specific one there will be another which is surely as good or even better.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I love mostly vintage, and there were a lot of interesting brands before the quartz revolution. I just bought a ZentRa from West Germany this week, and I have a GUB Glashütte from East Germany, so nowdays I am studying the history of German watchmaking. But I always encounter a new name which I haven't heard before - and this is the most exciting part of dealing vintage.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

As a big sci-fi guy, my ultimate grail is the Hamilton Odyssee 2001, the one with the dauphine hands. If you don't know it, the story behind this is that director Stanley Kubrick asked Hamilton to create watches for his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Hamilton succeded, you can see that watch in the film. But they couldn't sell that modell on the market, so they create a totally new watch, a funky-looking automatic with round case. It looks futuristic and represents the Space Age so with this origin story it is a must-have watch for me. Other grails are the white-blue Omega Geneve Dynamic and the unusual black Omax Spaceman Audacieuse watch.
