The last of the vintage Seikos back from servicing. This one is essentially NOS and it suffered from having sat for so long. It's a hybrid quartz, so it sweeps like a mechanical but gets power from a battery. The mechanical movement had gotten gummed up and needed a good cleaning. Running great now. Seiko EL-370 from 1971.

What a clean watch. Loved that #seiko
It's not a hybrid quartz. It's an electronic balance system. This one has no quartz crystal, instead it uses the balance as both motor and regulator powered by a cell.

Was lumping it in with "quartz as battery powered" - which I agree as an incorrect description of this watch. Not sure what else is out there that's like it other than other Seikos with battery powered mechanical watches.

Many other companies made electronic balance watches. Such as Hamilton, Lip, ESA, Landeron, Citizen, Timex and of course Seiko. Tuning fork watches such as Bulova Accutrons are also battery powered.
There were for a short time hybrid quartz and electric balance watches using the balance as a motor to power the moment of the watch and the quartz as a regulator. Only citizen and Timex used this (Bulova used the tuning fork with the quartz) but this was quickly replaced by the lavet stepping motor.

Good info. Some more options to look out for.
I love the era of watch dials when applied hour markers seem like they were the norm. They make dials so much more interesting
