Baltic Aquascaphe Dual-Crown

The Baltic Aquascaphe Dual-Crown is the "Super Compressor" version of the French brand's homonymous diver.

This reinterpretation of the “Super Compressor” offers a unique aesthetic. It largely respects the classic dimensions (39 mm in diameter, 47 mm in length, 20 mm between the lugs and 11.9 mm in height), but the whole package is fresh and modern.

The 316L stainless steel case features an all-over smooth brushing. The exception is a very finely polished facet on the edge of the bezel. The lugs have a modest drop and are perforated. The bezel, from above, looks smooth and narrow. The extensive domed sapphire crystal offers a perfect transition into the case.

The lower crown is used to adjust the time and is screwed in. The upper one is used to rotate the internal bezel and is not threaded, although it offers great resistance.

The screw-down case back features concentric brushing and engravings of the brand name in the centre and the watch specifications around the periphery.

The watch provides 200 m of water resistance.

The dial is glossy black, but without going overboard. It is modern: minimalist and very legible. The main hands are of the pencil type. The seconds hand features a large lollipop. The printing on the dial is just the right amount, The bluish Super-LumiNova BGW9 works spectacularly.

The watch is equipped with a tapered Tropic-style rubber strap with a duly signed buckle. The brand also offers an optional "grains of rice” metal bracelet.

It is powered by the Miyota 9039 caliber adjusted by Baltic and delivering an impressive accuracy of +7 seconds/day.

The watch is surprisingly thin despite the extensive domed sapphire. In general, it appears to be somewhat larger than it actually is once placed on the wrist.

Overall, this contemporary take on the “Super Compressor” genre is impressive.

It sells for €780 with the Tropic-style strap, which is a somewhat high price compared to other offerings from smaller brands that use the same caliber.

Yet it seems the Aquascaphe represents an affordable alternative compared to “Super Compressor” style watches from Swiss brands, such as Longines, Milus or Alpina. Compared to the latter, it is definitely distinct and attractive.
