So a few years back I bought a Seiko PADI diver that turned out to be fake. Stuff I should have caught at the time but because of the circumstances, didn't. Owning the watch bugged me because it was a fake - at least on the surface. Underneath the caseback revealed a proper Seiko 4R36 movement. So while the hands and dial were fake, the engine was the real deal.
The case wasn't anything much special but it was without crown guards so it was pretty obvious where I'd need to go to get any satisfaction out of the watch itself. I had a contact of mine Source a new top hat Sapphire crystal, the proper hands and dial and did the mods to bring it to looking like a vintage 62MAS.
While it's not in constant rotation, it is still in rotation and wearing it doesn't make me want to hurt somebody. Bottom line, it's a modded watch even though the movement, dial and hands are OEM Seiko. Just like in the world of motorcycles, cars and anything else you can modify, you'll never get any of the money and time you put in to the thing back out.
Everybody has an opinion on mods but sometimes you do a mod just to wash the bad taste out of your mouth from a mistake.
