The first gen AT use the 2500 coaxial movement which is quite a bit thinner than the current ones

In my opinion the old model looks just as good, it's just going for a simpler, more subtle and dressy aesthetic while subsequent versions are much sportier. I would totally support having both in one collection if you like the design since I think they are different enough.

To OP, since you already have two black dials I would go silver for the variety, though I do like the black more for the reasons you listed.

Here's a mother of pearl AT36 I was very lucky to get a few years ago 😍 Depending on the light the dial can look anywhere from ice blue to ivory though the pearl effect is a bit difficult to capture on photo
