Buffing & Polishing 💎

I have recently gotten a bench top buffer and I have the pads/wheels that came with it but I don’t know a lot about polishing. I’d like to take an old Seiko from the 60’s that I have with some fairly deep scratches and get it back to a mirror polish.

Are we talkin’ different pads or different pastes or both? How long should I keep pressure against the wheel? Can I polish a watch without taking out the movement? I appreciate any advice, Thank You!

Do you mean just regular polishing will remove metal? If this is true then if I buff it long enough of course keep checking, will regular polishing remove scratches? Or if I have a watch that is brushed, will polishing bring it to a more mirror like finish? Last question, can you reccemend a top rate all around compound for buffing/polishing? Thank you! 🌈

Thank you so much! This is very helpful 🌈

I’d proceed with caution. Not only will it remove metal, you run the risk of removing any chamfered edges that you will not be able to get back. Also, if you have mixed finishes you run the risk of polishing a brushed one or vice versa (depending on pad).

Thank you for this advice. I have an old case and bracelet and I got some of the specific high temp buffing tape so I think just practice and trial and error will be the order of the day. I had not considered edges and I love a sharp edge so thank you for that too. The biggest thing I need to find is an all purpose sort of paste/compound so I can use one product to get the whole job done.

To me, it would be super helpful for brushed bracelets.
