Vaer D4 Solar Diver Review

Sharp, well-made watch for the price point. Not quite a year ago I decided to get a dive watch and wanted to go solar. Initially, the Citizens Promast...

To me, the relatively recent surge in microbrand watches is attributable to five things:

1. The internet

2. The internet

3. The internet

4. The widespread availability of reliable mechanical movements

5. Newcomers' freedom to explore both creative and classic designs

Let's face it, when it comes to movements quartz is quartz. Scientifically brilliant, crazy accurate, affordable, reliable and, well, boring. I think the cachรฉ of now widely available mechanical movements has helped fuel the growing interest in microbrands. From Swiss manufacturers like ETA (now only for Swatch Group's respectable brand lineup) and its horological cousin Sellita to Japanese movements from Seiko and Citizen (Miyota), good hand-wound and automatic movements are within reach of not-wealthy collectors like me.

That said, microbrands that have caught my eye primarily on cool design plus build quality are British CW, French Baltic and Lorier, Canadian Branch, Singapore-based Vario and RZE, U.S. Vaer and Autodromo, and sorta kinda global Furlan Marri.

Sharp, well-made watch for the price point. I wanted a solar watch and the Citizens Promaster Eco Drive Diver was on my mind but for the 44mm diameter. IMO, the D4's 38mm size perfectly suits my 6.75" wrist. Besides, the no-date deep blue dial, nicely proportioned hands and faux gilt accents make this watch better looking, again in IMO. Slight misalignment: the seconds hand doesn't quite hit the indices but after I noticed it I rarely notice it. Unidirectional bezel lacks the customary 15-minute emphasis but is otherwise very legible and reassuringly clicks and locks. Lume is good but I wish it lasted longer. SS bracelet is comfortable, easy to size, and complements the watch. Plus, the quick release feature allows for easy changes to a variety of straps; Vaer's blue horween leather strap looks fantastic. Customer service and responsiveness have been excellent and I get a strong sense of the Vaer community. Would recommend. Hope this helps and if you can tell me how/where to post this as a review I'd be happy to.
