I own a GMT Master and a DJ. Also have two Omegas. Rolex is objectively better from my experience. The bracelets are extremely comfortable, the dials are amazing, and the designs are timeless. A DJ from 40 years ago looks very similar to a new one. The status thing is true, but there is a history preceding it. Are Rolex watches worth the price? Probably not, but no Luxury watch is. Whoever wants a watch with amazing value, just buy a G-Shock 5600E and be happy. :-)
Maybe it will go down, but not to the same level from 2010. EVERYTHING is more expensive now because of inflation. The fact is money is worth less thanks to central banks money printing scheme. Remember how you could buy a seiko 5 for 50USD? Not the case anymore.
The same is true for mechanical movements. I dare to say even watches are outdated novelties. If the argument is just to buy the Sapphire model because it is modern, let's just buy GShocks, because they are more accurate and resistant.
The rating is not only for depth, but also for pressure. You can submit a watch to a high water pressure even if you don't dive deep. If you are kite surfing at high speed and hit the water hard, that may be equivalent to a deep dive (for a short period of time).
That is why watches rated 30m should never be worn while swimming. Just your arms moving underwater will generate a pressure greater than the 30m rating.
