Want to know more about this pocketwatch

Hey everyone,

I got this watch from my grandpa and I don’t know anything about it. Was hoping someone on here would know something about it.

The text on the dial reads:

International Watch Co

International Watch Co is now known by its abbreviation, IWC. It is a Swiss brand. Apart from that, I can tell you nothing. You may find out more by following this link though.

That's IWC, a German watchmaker allegedly still in existence.

I see little opening tabs at both 11 and 1 o'clock, which leads me to believe this is some lever set railroad watch. I don't have a (working) one of those, so I'll refer you to https://thetruthaboutwatches.com/2020/10/how-to-set-a-lever-set-pocket-watch/

Nice looking watch. IWC is pretty well known,

A photo of the movement would helpful if you would like more info. It's usually possible to open the back cover.

If it doesn't lift easily with a fingernail, I'd suggest going to a watchmaker to open it or buying a caseback opener if you don't have one already. I would avoid trying to open it with e.g. a kitchen knife because it's easy to cut oneself and/scratch the watch.

To me it looks more like pin set than lever set, but tricky to tell definitively from one photo.

Now that I know what that means, I must agree. That's advanced stuff I haven't gotten to yet.

It appears to be hinged at the bottom and have a little opening tab at around 1 o'clock. Unless one is really hamfisted, this likely only requires the leap of faith to open.
