My watch journey

Wanted to share my watch journey and how it started:

1st watch- My parents bought me this exact watch back in 1988/89. I was so happy as a kid to have it and remember showing off with my friends all the time. I really thought I was cool with the little spider going around. I have no idea what happened to that watch. Fast forward to January 2024, Guess what I found on eBay? Yes, could not believe it. My parents were shocked. My mom couldn’t remember, however my father did right away. He said I cried when I lost it. Can’t remember how or when I lost it. I think maybe around the time I was in 8th grade. Brand: Peniel. Cost: $15.

2nd watch- 1st watch I bought we my own money.. 😂Bought this watch at Kmart around 94/95. The digital part goes in and out and the quarts still works perfectly fine. I still wear it, and honestly can’t believe the band has not rot/broke or faded much. Back then I didn’t think much of it. The fact that I still own it, I cherish that now.

Brand: Advance Cost $5.

3rd watch: This watch was gifted to me by my father in 1996 when I turned 18. He purchased this watch in 1978 not to long after I was born. Now, he didn’t buy it new, he bought this off a person who came into his bodega (small grocery store) in Passaic, Jersey. The fact that he bought it not soon after I was born has nothing to do with the purchase, he bought it because the guy wanted $10 for it and when he got home, my mother was fighting at him because he had spent the $10 bucks for a watch. It was such a big fight, that my dad ended up sleeping with me as pretty much newborn in the living room. Nothing special, but it was supposedly their first fight and the first time my dad slept with me as a new born. Now, that’s the story my dad told me so I’m sticking to it. I asked my mom about their first fight and she said that it was over my dad spending habits around beer, watches and bell bottoms.. Anyways, when he gifted me the watch, I had no clue about it.. just thought it was annoying I had to wind the thing. But this watch was really the one that raised my curiosity about watches and how they worked. The rest is history. I have bought and sold etc etc but never got rid of watch #2 or #3 and glad I found #1. We really think was the same one they bought me.

After a few years and the internet, Sicura brand goes back to around 1939/1955. They did ok and at some point around 1980 Breitling went out of business or something along those lines and the owner of Sicura bought the rights to the name of Breitling and Navitimer. The owner of Sicura started focusing on the Breitling name and phased out Sicura and the rest is history.

Brand: Sicura cost $10 (free to me)

Wanted to share my journey in this weird, yet interesting hobby, but most importantly the watches and the machinery behind them. I’m no watch expert and never will be, I don’t worry to much about brand, accuracy, or looks. I have my favorite brands and those I don’t like, but I will never disrespect.. (unless is a smart watch 😂 j/k) I just like the feel and the thought that most watches on this earth can potentially live forever.. and they tell us time, something we know is coming (time) and once it passes you(time), we won’t get it back, but we get, new time again and again..

Great post. I was actually thinking of doing a similar one a while back, but wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested 😂

Anyway, I don’t have watch #1 and #2 anymore, only watch #3. But I still remember my first and second vividly. I‘m also not sad that I don’t own them anymore, since they wouldn’t get worn anymore. For me it’s enough that I enjoyed them at the time. I‘m actually thinking of getting rid of #3 as well because I don’t wear it anymore and don’t think I ever will again
