It seems counter-intuitive that the ETA 2894-2 (6.1mm), one of the most popular modular chronograph movements, and therefore most watches featuring it, are thinner than chronos driven by the popular ETA/Valjoux 7750 (7.9mm) integrated movement.
What's the technical background?
One would expect integrated to be more compact, not noticeably less.

Are you sure about that? Teddy Baldassarre describes the 2894 as modular and the 7750 as fully integrated:
