GMTM monitors 2 time zones. GMTM2 is able to monitor 3 time zones.

That doesn’t really explain anything, but I take it that it means that the movement has GMT mechanism.
*3 timezones if you can keep track of it in your head.
My pet theory sides with Occam’s Razor: Rolex didn’t see a reason to get rid of the rotating bezel and so left it as a convenient time-set option. And the Rolex website says it tracks two
