Such a wonderful idea passing down a birth year watch, and taking into account your daughter will most likely be wearing the watch for decades longer than yourself I'd be looking at something around 36 mm , a unisex dial with a solid well known movement.
For me something like Junghans Max Bill with it's smaller lugs and thin dimensions would suit and has a classic timeless design.
