Compass bezel musings

I recently acquired this Seiko Atlas. I wanted a watch with a movable compass bezel, having recently learnt of its utility.

I was intrigued by several comments online about how freely the compass bezel crown moves and how this impaired its usefulness. I think that perhaps that some may mistake “compass bezel” with “compass.” This bezel seems to function well as a solar direction calculator- the looseness doesn’t bother me since it needs to be reset each use (time flows on).

My area has been beset with overcast and rain, but the device points appropriately when set.

I have one!!! The second hand in yellow, but the same one!! I love my atlas!

I think most people think it’s too loose because they never use it and it’ll drift away from N being at top dead center on its own. As someone who has an Alpinist with the same complaint, I literally have never looked down seen the compass not aligned and had that impact me negatively in any way.
