I love all the Seiko Alpinist variants in this thread! I haven't seen the 1959 reinterpretation yet so here's mine:
Imo, the "neater" way as you've shown is more functional than the "standard" way. It balances out the top heavy dial and gives redundancy at the buckle. It gives me the most mental security that the watch isn't going to incidentally fall off or get stolen off the wrist. It's also the most secure way to put the watch on, assuming you do what I do: create the initial loop and then put your hand through it similar to a bracelet.
We got married in SF! The goal of "having a better watch" is always there... I thought the same but couldn't bite the bullet on some of the watches I wanted to get for the wedding. In the end, which watch I wore didn't matter and I'm glad I wore the watch that's essentially my everyday companion.
