Imo, the "neater" way as you've shown is more functional than the "standard" way. It balances out the top heavy dial and gives redundancy at the buckle. It gives me the most mental security that the watch isn't going to incidentally fall off or get stolen off the wrist. It's also the most secure way to put the watch on, assuming you do what I do: create the initial loop and then put your hand through it similar to a bracelet.
