Hello. I am a graphic and product designer and love old watches and compasses. I recently launched Venturian WatchWorks — Inspired by the spirit of exploration, self discovery and enduring value of design and style.
As a graphic designer I LOVE the action packed in such a small space. Similar to compasses. This functional tool can be highly styled or bare bones minimal. It is a riot. So much so I designed my own watch and launched a watch brand. Call me a rookie collector considering I don't have much except a few other than my own!
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
Some cheap push button G Shock looking contraption. And then a Timex outdoor watch that I can't remember the name of, but were super popular growing up. Orange, gray and black. And then a baby blue swatch watch with a watermelon red band. SO good. I would stare at that thing and wonder where it came from. It also had those cool plastic crystal protectors that clicked on. Very 80's.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
My own. Venturian means, "one who ventures". I wanted to create a brand name that was the wearer—synonomous with adventure, exploration and the wonderful world outdoors. My first watch, the Wildsider, pays homage to the times spent outside. There is a mantra on the inner bezel that reads, "Take time to explore new terrain under more stars and wilder landscapes." It is designed to look rugged and function like outdoor gear. It is made to be lightweight so titanium was chosen for this reason. It is also low profile to move through gear with the least amount of snagging.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
I am not sure I have the authority to answer this. What I would say is dig into the origin story and hook into something meaningful other than the look. You might get more out of each piece that way.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
I am a huge OMEGA fan. I love James Bond. Beyond that I really dig what Zenith is doing as well as AERA.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
That would be the 007 No Time To Die titanium Seamaster on nato b/c I love Bond, am a huge fan of Omega and love titanium.
