New purchase?

Good afternoon everybody!

I was looking through ebay yesterday and found this watch, it is the exact watch my grandfather, mitary pilot, had for many years. I saw it broken at home when I was little.

I was thinking about purchasing it so I can have something that makes me remember him on a daily basis.

But then, in terms of a watch itself, can you give me some opinion and how much is okay to pay for it? I see it’s 5 atm, and I know 5 atm sometimes mean you can barely shower with the watch. However, aren’t Vostok actually good in terms of waterproof, so these 5 atm actually mean I can actually swim with it? Also I like that it is mechanical and manual winding!

I would not pay more than 120ish dollars for one. I love the story and that alone probably makes it worth purchasing. When it comes to waterproof, if the watch has a screw down crown you can probably do more in the wet but I would still avoid submerging it. Vostok has a different series "Amphibia" that is a diver watch and withstand water better.

The price is actually only 83$ with all the papers and everything, brand new watch, so I guess it’s a good deal

To be totally pedantic, your grandfather's may have said CCCP (USSR) on the bottom instead of Poccnr (Russia). The Soviet Union hasn't made new watches in a long while. My amateur guess was about $100 so the price seems reasonable.

Yeah that's about the usual price they should be. If you like it and it means something to you, definitely consider it!

Yeah I thought so too, I would love to get the original one and service it, but it’s long since my granny left the apartment in the beginning of the war and came to Spain with us. In the end, I don’t need it to be exactly as his, or maybe his watch was made after 1991, so that would make it Made in Russia:)

Got myself the blue one here, and yes you can use it for swimming as long as you screw the crown up tightly

Thank you, the smaller Komandirskie are just perfect for nato straps

Speaking about the strap, buy an aftermarket 18mm very soon after you purchase the Vostok, their stock leather strap are just outrageously bad

If you can get this sub $100, it’s a win!
