SOTC - January 2024 - How many watches do you all have?

Here is EVERY watch I own. Including the casios, my first ever watch (Mickey), and my Dad’s old Seiko square. 12 watches total. How many do I wear? More like 6.

Here are my top four in terms of wrist time right now:

Image

I bought the cement-dialed Seiko 5 on the last day of 2023 so it’s getting most of my time simply because it is new. the black dialed Seiko 5 was my first automatic and still one of my most worn watches. just the right size and goes with everything. The brew was my first and only micro brand watch, and It is the most fun to wear. Dearest to me is the constellation. My future wedding watch. I spent months tracking down this model in good condition. My partner also has a vintage gold watch to wear for that occasion one day.

My casios get rotated in and out and the G-shock is my camping, water, sports, beater watch.

4 of my watches (Omega Constellation, Vintage Seiko, Fossil Commuter, and Mickey Mouse) I will never let go, these are my sentimental pieces.

When asked how many watches are in your collection, how do you respond? Do you include every last one, even if it’s a keepsake that never gets worn, or a fun little Casio? I have 12 watches, but I wear 10 at most.

I keep 10 watches in my watch box now and I’m sticking to a one in-one out policy for the foreseeable future. I don’t know yet what my next watch will be, but I want to focus on taking my time and saving for higher end watches that I really truly love.

Have any questions about my collection? let me know! I’d love to hear the community’s thoughts on some of these questions, or your collecting philosophies in general.

Great collection. Currently I own 8, but im up for 12

I don’t like to count but let’s just put it this way. I’ve got two suitcases with 36 spots in each one and a couple other cases around the house all full, and a drawer or two with a bunch of other watches that I don’t wear anymore so I’d say about 100 plus

I’d love to go on a treasure hunt through your house, that’s amazing

I currently own 10 watches in total but I don't count my wedding gift pocket watch or my first watch which basically doesn't get worn so I count my collection as 8

4+1 beauties. Those are all incredible Japanese watches

I have 78 watches. A ridiculous number, and I have made a commitment to myself to not buy any new pieces in 2024 and start paring down the collection.

I wish you luck on your journey. I think you’ll find that the ones you keep, you’ll value that much more. A great goal for 2024! now go unsubscribe and unfollow anything that advertises new releases!

That gray Seiko on Nato and tank are bangers.

·

you’re gonna have to post your collection when you reach that goal, that’s a museum!

I answer “too many” because it’s true. Lately I’ve been only “counting” the ones in my winders, 14 total, and pretending the 2 other large filled watch boxes are… not part of the main collection. But the total is still over 50. Yes, I know that’s ridiculous and out of control. I am trying to get it down to something like 20 or so. I will never be a small collection guy.

I think i’d be the same way if I had that many. “I only reaaaally have 14”. But you don’t need to be a small collection guy, as long as they don’t become a burden, and they still bring you some joy. There is nothing wrong with a lot of watches. You’re definitely well into true collector status.

Right. Those others don’t count, I tell myself. I guess it’s just feeling guilty that I’ve bought so many things for myself. They definitely still bring me joy and satisfaction, well most of them. I do have the “meh” box, with some I’ve fallen out of love with, and some are just so old that my tastes have changed since I got them. I made a lot of mistakes when I started. I pretty much know what I like now. The big thing is the more you have, the less wrist time each one gets.

I'm in a very similar situation to you where I own 12 watches but only wear 4 or so

Many of them are momentos tied to a specific moment that feel like a watch tied to a previous version of me, and I wouldn't wear them now.

I still count all the watches I don't wear as part of my collection though, including the smartwatch I use as a heart rate monitor during workouts, because technically, it is a watch.

I've imposed a strict 12 watch limit for myself, but with the vast majority of the 12 being watches I have no intention of ever actually wearing regularly I'm starting to rethink whether that number is fair to me ...

I like that, and I think i’m going to confidently say “twelve” from here on out when people ask how many I have. Being strict with 12 allows room for some sentimental or useful smart pieces while also giving room for enough daily pieces to still have some variety. We can always trade out watches in the future to change things up!
