Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

My grandfather and dad were both into watches. I got my first Timex at 5 years old and have mainly owned Swatches, Fossils, Timexes and the like. Two years ago my wife bought me a Shinola after a close friend passed away (he loved Shinolas). More recently I bought my son a Tissot Gentleman and it re-kindled my love for watches.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

1971 Timex

Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?

My best friend is from Detroit and owned several Shinola watches. He passed away two years ago and my wife bought me a Shinola Runwell 41mm shortly afterwards. Every time I put that watch on I think of Steve.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

Join WatchCrunch! I had been poking around various watch review sites, watch market sites and Instagram, but mainly I felt about 10 brands were getting all the attention. I love the community here at WatchCrunch. People are open about what watches they enjoy and they don't care about whether those choices are part of the "in crowd" of watch enthusiasts.

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I'm still learning so much. I continue to explore the many watch brands and styles out there.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

A Grand Seiko spring drive. I'm an engineer and the mechanics of that movement absolutely fascinates me! There is a Grand Seiko boutique in Boston where I live, and I've seen the Grand Seiko artistry up close. Someday I hope to purchase one.
