Funny enough, from AlphaM! He was promoting fashion watches in his videos when I was really trying to improve my style before heading off to college, so he exposed me to them. I didn’t buy his watches, but I went down the rabbit hole and the rest is history.
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
A Movado Bold gifted to me by a family member for my high school graduation. Way too big on me, there were no indices at all and the watch was made of plastic. I wore it twice before selling it years later.
The first watch I WANTED was a solar powered Seiko SNE031 after ages of research. I got it for Christmas in 2017 and I still have it and wear it.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
I chatted with a guy who ran a watch repair kiosk at a mall about the vintage JLC he was wearing. He was so impressed with my watch knowledge that he gifted me, a complete stranger, a ‘70s Seiko. I still have it!
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Slow down. Buying a quartz watch as a first watch totally okay. I did, and I still have it and wear it.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Chinese brands! For a first luxury purchase, I’m looking at Omega, Tudor and Grand Seiko.
Q: What is your grail watch and why?
A modern blue dial Rolex Datejust in 36mm with a smooth bezel. I waffle between wanting an Oyster or a Jubilee. It was the first watch I ever fell in love with and I still fawn over it. Much too expensive these days for me to justify buying one.
