This is just me rambling. I think the WWII vets bought inexpensive and sensible watches in the 1950's. Kids to raise, careers to start, and shine your sensible black lace-up shoes. In the 1960s they had established careers, their kids were out of college and they could splurge a bit.
I have one of my Grandpa's Hamiltons; one he wore for over 40 years and his Bulova Acutron which was a big deal when my Grandma bought it for him. I also have my dad's "Nam Watch" an Omega he bought in Da Nang. Both Grandpa and Dad had the means to buy a nice watch. Before that, not so much.
