Watch Straps Go To

When it comes to buying a new leather strap, what is the #1 place that comes in mind? And why?

While we’re at it, whats a good price range for a strap and at what price would you think is too much for a strap?

I’d be really interested in hearing everyones opinions.

I personally dont have a “#1 go to“ place for straps just yet. Ive purchased a few straps here and there such as Colareb, Delugs, StrapsCo.. etc. The theme, overall structure, and price ranges are all quite different. We have StrapsCo at around $20-$30 a piece, Colareb at $35-$60 a piece, and yet Delugs mostly $95-$130 a piece. I purchased 5 straps on blackfriday from Delugs straps spending over hundreds of dollars and yet, the leather material just wasnt satisfying for the price. There was no leather smell, most straps are extremely thin fits awkwardly on some of my thicker watches with the lugs sticking out a bit. Anyways, whats yours?

i live in different side of the world (indonesia) but when it comes to leather strap choice i usually go with this:

  1. hnmd, for normal local leather cost 20-30$. import or exotic usually cost more

2. ive leathergoods, usually made custom leather goods like strap, watchroll, passport cover, etc. price range 20-50$ depending on the leather that you choose

I buy almost all my leather straps from Velbenist, unless I want a specific leather that they don't carry.

The thing to keep in mind is that the leather cost is the smallest part of the final cost of the strap. You can buy most leather (say chromexcel) for $10 a square foot or so. And you can make a lot of straps out of a square foot of leather. Even something like Shell Cordovan is only going to be $150 a square foot. At most your are looking at $10 of leather in a strap.

The cost is in labor of sewing, cutting, finishing the edges, punching holes, etc.

That's why IMHO it makes no sense to buy leather straps from bad leather.
