I'm a husband, dad, air cooled VW guy, and watch fan. My watch journey started in 1995 and I have a small but fun collection of family heirlooms, gifts and pieces I have bought for myself. Almost everything in my collection is vintage. I like watching repair and restoration videos to see how things work inside a watch.
If you really want a vintage chronograph, there are a ton on ebay right now. I did a quick search. There were several Doxa's and a number of other interesting things.
The other thing to consider when buying a vintage chronograph is the cost of repairs if they go south. My profile pic is the Valjoux 22 movement in one of my watches that I just had serviced. The cost of the service was almost the list price of the Tissot 1938. Its a family heirloom so I didn't mind, but it can get out of hand quickly.
Everyone here had good points. I'm not a fan of Frankenwatches, but the bottom line is if you think its cool and want it on your wrist, go for it. However, finding an original 1940s era chronograph that is an original piece from a brand other than Rolex isn't terribly hard. I've seen several in the last few months around $2000, and they are really neat to look at. Plus that new Tissot 1938 is a real looker, new with a warranty for around the same money.
I bought this Nomad back in 1998. I couldn't sleep one night and was trolling through ebay trying to find a vintage post card I was looking for and this popped up as a "suggested for you". There was 3 minutes left and I bid $10.49 and got it. Its Swiss, manual wind, nice looking, has never been serviced and has gone on every family vacation with me since I bought it as I'm not concerned if it gets lost or stolen. Not sure how old it is. I would bet 1950s. I just bought a new strap for it for our last trip as it was needing some love.
If I recall correctly, when I was a kid, there was a brand of condoms called Durex. Too funny.
